AKYEM ASAFO ACCIDENT DEATH TOLL SHOOT UP TO 19

It was reported earlier that, two Grindbird Kia buses had collided head-on at the Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra – Kumasi highway with sixteen(16) persons feared dead after the two buses collided.

According to reports, three other individuals from the Akyem Asafo accident have also passed away pushing the death toll to 19.

The accident occurred on Friday dawn,between two VIPs on the Accra-Kumasi highway as one of the buses attempted overtaking the other.

16 persons were reported dead on the spot with some injured persons trapped in the two accident vehicles.


Both drivers were unable to survive.


The injured persons were rushed to the nearby hospitals at Asafo, Kyebi and surrounding areas, ie: the Suhum Government Hospital and Akyem Asafo Health Centre for emergency treatment.

A number of about five ambulances rushed to the scene to convey the injured persons with heavy-duty vehicles assisting to help clear the area of the wreckage.

One of the buses with registration number GT 5629-18 carried passengers heading to Kumasi from Accra and the other with registration number GE 5510-15.

According to some locals a three-year-old was among the dead.

The police, firefighters and paramedics from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi, and Ayensuano helped to extricate the bodies from the buses.

The bodies have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary.
