Hal Linden was discharged from the Army in 1954 and eventually became the replacement of Sydney Chaplin in the Broadway production of Bells Are Ringing in 1958. Later, he appeared as Billy Crocker in the off-Broadway revival of the Cole Porter musical Anything Goes. He portrayed Mayer Rothschild in the musical The Rothschilds.
