I lived in hostels until I was two years old, and then she got a home in Camden, where I grew up.”

Daniel added: “She was on benefits for a long while, which is what Americans call welfare. Now, she works for a special needs school in Camden, which is the biggest drug market in Europe. It was where the Sex Pistols were born, as well as punk. Amy Winehouse lived there. It can be quite a dark place, because there are loads of drugs and all the drugs went into homes.

Daniel Kaluuya also spoke about his mother being strict. He said: “I was that kid who could do schoolwork really easily—but I was bored, so I messed around a lot. My mom was strict, so she wanted me to get my grades. As long as I got the grades, I was thinking I could do whatever the fuck I liked. I just wanted to have fun and have vibes—to get grades to prove myself and carry on.”

“If I got bad grades, I didn’t see it as a reflection of me. I knew from an early age that school was a test of your memory, rather than a test of your intellectualism. It’s not about learning; it’s about retaining.”

Even during his Oscars speech when he won Best Supporting Actor for the movie ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’, Daniel appreciated his mother for raising him and being a very supportive mother. His mother Damalie and older sister were moved by his speech and they had tears in their eyes.

However, Damalie Namusoke wore a confused expression after her son Daniel Kaluuya crack a joke, mentioning that his parents had sex to bring him here. “It’s incredible,” Daniel said. “My mom met my dad, they had sex, it’s amazing. Do you know what I’m saying? I’m here, do you know what I mean? I’m so happy to be alive, so I’m going to celebrate that tonight.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Kaluuya has stated on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that his mother did not understand his success. He said his mother Damalie Namusoke isn’t impressed by his success. “Because there’s no stable income, she doesn’t understand it,” Daniel said. “She doesn’t understand the term freelance, she doesn’t get it.”

“I was like, ‘Mom, I got nominated for an Oscar!’, and she was like, ‘Congratulations, does this mean you’re going to have a job?'”
