The R&B icon Chaka Khan’s worse nightmare came true when her then-25-year-old son was arrested for the murder of a 17-year-old boy.
How did the Incident happen?
According to the LAPD, Damien had shot the victim, Christopher Bailey, while struggling with a gun. The gun went off, fatally wounding Bailey, who succumbed to his injuries. Sgt. Catherine Plows of the LAPD reported:
“The bullet struck the victim, who was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injury.”
Damien admitted to the incident and claimed that the struggle and the subsequent discharge of the weapon had taken place while he was defending himself from Bailey, who had struck him.
Damien Holland was charged with the murder of Christopher Bailey, who was staying at Chaka Khan’s home in Los Angeles with his accused killer. Damien shared a home with his mother, girlfriend, and five-year-old daughter, Daija Jade Holland.
Bailey, an aspiring singer, and rapper was a permanent resident at Chaka Khan’s home, working on his first album with Damian in Damian’s studio. Damien was arrested and released on $1 million bail after being arraigned.
Damien Holland‘s Trail
Damian admitted during the trial that the initial story he told police about struggling for the gun was a lie concocted out of fear. When Damien brandished the gun menacingly at the victim, the gun accidentally discharged, resulting in the shooting. According to Damien, Bailey had claimed he had had an affair with his girlfriend, and in the ensuing argument, the gun he was threatening the young man with went off.
During the trial, Chaka Khan, Damien Holland’s mother, was called to testify and described the victim as a bright and talented young man, claiming that Bailey would have survived the shooting if police had not delayed the arrival of paramedics at the scene.
Khan praised her son, Damien, describing him as a kind gentleman who was distraught over accidentally killing his friend. Damien sobbed on the stand, confessing that he never intended to kill or harm Bailey in any way.
At the end of the trial in 2006, Damien Holland was found innocent by the jury, a spokesman for the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office says, “There’s not sufficient evidence at this time to file criminal charges.”
But in the civil suit that followed, Damien Holland and his mother Chaka Khan were found liable for Bailey’s death and ordered to pay over 1.3 million in compensation to his family.
Khan, who had never wavered in her support of her son, whom she raised as a single parent after her divorce from his father, Richard Holland, paid the compensation.
Khan married her second husband, Damien Holland’s father, Richard Holland, in 1976. The marriage reportedly caused a rift between Khan and several members of Rufus, in particular, Andre Fischer. Holland wanted her to tone down her sexy stage image, but she refused. Following their split in 1979, Holland filed for divorce in 1980, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
After escaping the murder charge the next years saw his career as a music producer plummet, as his dependence on drugs grew. Damien Holland’s girlfriend, Rahsaan Morris — the mother of his child — was also heavily involved in the drug scene, and before long, neither was in a condition to be good parents to their daughter, Daija Jade Holland.
In 2010, Damien Holland’s mother, Khan petitioned the L.A. County Superior Court for permanent custody of her granddaughter, then ten-years-old, who was in her care due to her parents’ inability to care for her.
Damien Holland made headlines once more in December 2015, when he and his oil heir millionaire friend/Celebrity Rehab reality show star friend, Jason ‘Gummy Bear’ Davis, were reportedly arrested in Beverly Hills, CA for driving a stolen Audi Q5 and identity theft. Damien, on the other hand, has clearly been living life on the straight and narrow since then…
