Deborah Messing (née Shiling) is the first wife of American senator and activist, and political scientist Bernie Sanders.
Deborah Messing was born Deborah Shiling in 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland. She is 77 years old as of 2021. Her father, Moses Shiling, was the chief doctor of pulmonary diseases at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Bernie, the former presidential candidate has kept details of his first marriage secret from the media for so long. Apparently, Deborah also has been living a very low-key life far away from the media.
How did Deborah and Bernie meet? Messing and Sanders met in 1963 while attending the University of Chicago. The two volunteered for several months on the Israeli kibbutz Sha’ar HaAmakim before the two college sweethearts got married on September 6, 1964. The ceremony was held in the garden of her parent’s home in Baltimore in the presence of their friends, family, and loved ones. Shortly after the marriage, Messing and Sanders moved to Middlesex, a small hamlet on the outskirts of Montpelier, Vermont.
The beautiful couple’s marriage however didn’t last forever, the marriage ended in a divorce, after 18 months, in 1966. The couple didn’t have any children together during their 18 months marriage.
After the divorce, Sanders dated Susan Campbell Mott, with whom he had a son, Levi Sanders (his only biological child,) in 1969. In 1988, Sanders married his second wife Jane O’Meara Sanders, née Driscoll.
Messing lives in Montpelier, Vermont with her current husband Bob, whom she describes as ‘a poet slash logger slash philosopher’. A supporter of Sanders, Messing told Daily Mail, “All I can say is I believe in Bernie Sanders and I am a strong supporter.”
However, Deborah Shiling has managed to stay away from the limelight and the media as she tries to live a private and quiet life.
According to Daily Mail Online, Shiling previously worked for the Hunger Mountain Coop, a ‘20,000 square foot community-owned natural foods cooperative in Montpelier, Vermont. She worked as a buyer for the company for around twenty years. The Hunger Mountain Coop has about 170 employees as well as has over 500 local vendors and 8,000 member-owners.
Bernie Sanders’s ex-wife, Deborah Shiling gave birth to her baby girl back in the early 1970s with her second spouse Bob. However, the pair hasn’t talked about their only child, nor has revealed her name.
They now live in a house on a steep hill less than a mile from Montpelier.
However, Deborah Shiling’s ex-husband, Sanders has a biological child, a son Levi Sanders, born in 1969 with his ex-girlfriend Susan Campbell Mott.
