The young McNulty attended Manhattan College in New York City and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1940. He went to New York Medical College receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree with honors in 1943. He interned at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Sampson, New York.

Ann Blyth’s husband was a battalion aid surgeon with the 26th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima. McNulty’s military service began with the U.S. Navy from 1941 through 1949. His duties in the U.S. Navy took him to Sasebo, Japan, Peleliu, Palau, and also with Pioneer Regiment, 6th Marine Division in Tsingtao, China.
For his good works, he was honored with the American Area Campaign Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; China Service Medal; and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, McNulty returned to California where he began his residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Long Beach, California choosing Obstetrics & Gynecology with a subspecialty in Adolescent and Pediatric Gynecology.

Actress Ann Blyth’s husband’s husband, Dr. McNulty was active in several medical societies including American Medical Association; California Medical Association; Los Angeles County Medical Association; Los Angeles Obstetrical & Gynecological Society; and the Pacific Coast Obstetrical & Gynecological Society. McNulty became the beloved husband of the Hollywood actress Ann Blyth for more than 5 decades years before his sad passing. The two love birds exchanged their vows on 27 June 1953 at the St Charles Roman Catholic Church in San Fernando Valley.
The two have been together ever since until he passed away in 2007. Their marriage produced five children- They are Timothy Patrick, Maureen Ann, Kathleen Mary, Terence Grady, and Eileen Alana. McNulty and Blyth were both devout Catholics and were accorded the honorific rank of Lady and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Terence Cooke.

He was survived by his wife and children- Timothy, Maureen, Kathleen, Terence, and Eileen. He is also survived by ten grandchildren Shannon, Erin, Jessica, Caitlin, Ryan, Brendan, Kacie, Jimmy, Kelly, and Kevin.
