Dr. Ruth Westheimer is known to the world as a sex therapist, talk show host, author, professor, Holocaust survivor, and former Haganah sniper of German-American nationality. She was born Karola Ruth Siegel. She is one of the first to develop the field of media psychology. She has been active since 1959 and is still going strong at the age of 94. The mother of two, Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s first two marriages were brief. According to her, her marriages have contributed to her relationship advice. Her third marriage to Manfred Westheimer was the “real marriage” to her. Dr. Ruth and her husband Manfred Westheimer met on a ski tow in the Catskills.
They got married and their marriage lasted 36 years until Manfred died in 1997. Diane Sawyer, a television broadcast journalist asked the couple during an interview for the TV show 60 Minutes about their sex life, and Manfred answered, “The shoemaker’s children have no shoes.”
Dr. Ruth has two children. She once said: “I was so short – 4 feet 7 inches – that I couldn’t believe that anything could grow inside of me.”
Joel Westheimer
Joel Westheimer is the son of Manfred Westheimer and Ruth Westheimer. He was born in Washington Heights, New York City. Joel is an academic and a full professor at the University of Ottawa, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is known for his work in citizenship education.
Joel Westheimer started teaching in the New York City public school system. He enrolled in some courses at Columbia University’s Teachers College before he started his post-graduate studies at Stanford University. He earned his Masters in Design and Evaluation of Educational Programs.

Joel Westheimer then pursues a Ph.D. instead of going back to teaching. He developed and taught a course called “Experimental Curricula: The Case of Wilderness Education”. He was an assistant professor at New York University. At the University of Ottawa, he teaches as the University Research Chair in Democracy and Education.
Joel’s books include the critically acclaimed What Kind of Citizen: Educating Our Children for the Common Good, and the award-winning Pledging Allegiance: The Politics of Patriotism in America’s Schools and Among Schoolteachers: Community, Autonomy, and Ideology in Teachers’ Work.
Joel is the author of over 75 academic and professional journal articles, and book chapters. He became one of the directors of The Inequality Project, a nonprofit “conducting an in-depth examination of what high schools in the United States and Canada teach students about the critical issue of rising economic inequality.” He is a married man. He lives in Ottawa with his wife and two children.
Miriam Westheimer
Miriam Westheimer is also Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s child. After the end of Dr. Ruth’s second marriage, she became a single mother to her daughter Miriam. Miriam has a Doctorate of Education from Columbia University. She is into social services, nonprofit management, and education.
Miriam Westheimer has worked in the fields of education, social service, and nonprofit management. She is a founding executive director, international director, board president, project manager, and organizational/educational consultant. She is the director and Chief Pedagogical Officer at HIPPY (C.Y.) International.
