Her parents are Bill Cosby and Camille Cosby. Her name and that of her siblings all begin with the letter E meaning “excellence.”

Erika Cosby’s siblings are Erinn Cosby, Evin Harrah Cosby, Ensa Cosby, and Ennis Cosby. All her siblings are alive except her brother, Ennis Cosby, and her sister, Ensa Cosby. Ennis, 27 was shot in the head while changing a flat tire on the side of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles, California on January 16, 1997.

Erika Cosby is doing well for herself. She was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting. She was an artist in residence at the Abrons Arts Center (2009 to 2010) and was awarded a studio grant from The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation in 2011.

Erika Cosby has served as an adjunct art professor at New York University along with Huma Bhabha, Dike Blair, Wayne Koestenbaum, and others. Her piece, called Hanging Out To Dry, was displayed at the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art in 2014.

This painting was my ode to the scarcity—and to the plight—of the black doll. . . . The positioning of the dolls hanging from a clothesline, in an upside-down trajectory as they are suspended in perpetuity, suggests an uncertain future status. The expressionistic paint rendering and predominant use of red are a visceral interpretation of the persistent and relentless distortion of black imagery in our culture.

Erika Cosby’s work has been exhibited widely in New York and featured in galleries such as SALTWORKS Contemporary Art, the Arlington Arts Center, Slate Gallery, Artspace in New Haven, the Allegra LaViola Gallery, and The Last Brucennial. She worked with her father on Friends of a Feather: One of Life’s Little Fables Bill Cosby.

In early 2019 her work was featured in a solo show at Lesley Heller Gallery/Project Space and recently in a group shows at Freight+Volume, NYC, and Wild Palms in Dusseldorf, Germany. Her work has also been mentioned in publications including The New York Times, San Fransisco Chronicle, and Artforum.

Erika Cosby is a benefactor of the summer institute for A Long Walk Home, an art-based sexual assault awareness program in Chicago, Illinois.
