Ewe People still live in villages; choose their chiefs by voting- A GES Approved Textbook

Badu Nkansah limited, a wholly Ghanaian owned publishing house has, in a ‘History of Ghana’ textbooks described the Ewe of Ghana Ethnic groups’ religion as Voodoo, meaning “spirit”

According to the Publishers, the Ewe People still live in villages in the 21st Century and choose their chiefs by voting where the voting are influenced by their elders.

In strand 2 of page 18 of the History of Ghana Textbooks that surfaced on social media intercepted by Coverghana.com.gh further said, the Ewe’s tradition directs that their chief must never be seen drinking and must cover their head in public.

The book further said, the Ewe Ethnic group came into Ghana from other countries and speak many different dialects of the Ewe language.

“The traditional Ewe people’s religion is called Voodoo. Voodoo means ‘spirit’. Voodoo followers believe that Mawu is their creator. They also believe in other lower gods. The Ewe people still live in villages and choose their chiefs by voting. The voting is influenced by the elders. The Ewe Ethnic group came into Ghana from other countries” The book outlined.

In a reaction, the Volta Regional House of Chiefs led by Togbe Tepre Hodo IV has described the action as tribal bigotry which cast derogatory allusions and imuendos at Ewes, are to say the least, distasteful and a disgrace to the authors and publishers of the said materials intended to educate the younger generation of this country.

The chiefs in a statement have angrily called on the Publishers to immediately apologize, withdraw and destroy the bigotry History Textbooks against the Ewe ethnic groups.

“We deem it highly reprehensible for those responsible for this offensive publication, to harbor such vile thoughts about their fellow citizens of Ghana in the twenty first century.”

“We therefore unreservedly condemn this singular demonstration of tribal bigotry and prejudice and call on those responsible for the offensive publication, to withdraw the same from circulation and to destroy every part of the offending material. We further demand an unqualified apology from the authors and publishers of this base material to be rendered to all Ewe speaking citizens of Ghana. In addition, we urge other ethnic groups in this country, to condemn such divisive publications which only serve as a recipe for chaos and disunity.”
