Asamoah Gyan missed the last-minute penalty that could have given Ghana the chance to qualify for the semi-final stage of the 2010 world cup against Uruguay.
No African country has gone passed the quarter finals, Cameroon being the first to get to this stage in 1990 followed closely by Senegal in 2002 and then Ghana in 2010. All eyes were on Ghana hoping to break the curse for Africa but Asamoah Gyan couldn’t convert that penalty.
The captain of the team at that particular time Stephen “Tornado” Appiah broke his silence for the first time in 10 years on the incident during a discussion on Max Tv with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and Sitso Atrim .
The former captain insisted that he was not attacking Asamoah Gyan as the picture may have suggested but rather he was trying to give an instruction to Gyan when the referee blew for the penalty instead of a goal after Luis Suarez caught the ball with his hands.
No, I was not angry with Gyan, I was rather angry with the referee (Olagario Benquerenca from Portugal) and I was telling Gyan to take the ball and place it at the center circle but the vuvuzela noise in the stadium made it impossible for him to hear me and that was my frustration.
He said he was aware of the misinterpretation of the famous photo but that was not the case. He decided to use this opportunity to set the record straight regarding that iconic photo.
