Florence Turner was born on 21 August 1909 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA. She was the daughter of George F. Rooney, Sr. and Florence Sicking Rooney. Florence was the wife of Robert Edward Turner II, a billboard magnate, and the mother of media mogul Robert Edward “Ted” Turner, III.
While Ed Turner served in the Navy during World War II, the family followed him to his Gulf Coast post, but young Ted was left behind in a boarding school in Cincinnati. He was not the only child of the couple, Florence and her husband also had a daughter named Mary Jean Turner.
Mary died from a deadly illness at the age of 17. When Ted was nine, his family moved to Savannah, Georgia, and raised him as an Episcopalian.
Florence Turner’s husband owned an advertising company, and their eldest child Ted started helping in his father’s business from a young age. Although her husband was a successful businessman who provided well for his family, he suffered from bipolar disorder and was known to have extreme mood swings. Despite being financially secure, it was difficult for the family.

Florence’s Husband was physically abusive and ended up committing suicide when Ted was 24 in March 1963. After her husband’s death, her son took over the business and drowned himself in work to cope with his grief.

He soon founded CNN, the first all-news television channel in the United States.
