Geoff Dwight: Facts About Elton John’s Brother

Geoff Dwight is the brother of British singer, pianist, and composer Sir Elton Hercules John. Geoff’s brother gained critical success at its peak in the 1970s when he released a streak of chart-topping albums in the US and UK, which began with Honky Château (1972) and culminated with Rock of the Westies (1975).

Geoff Dwight was born in the year 1966, in Wirral, Cheshire, England, UK. He will be celebrating his 57 birthday in 2023. He is the son of Stanley Dwight, who served in the Royal Air Force, and Edna Dwight. His biological siblings are Stan Dwight, Robert Dwight, and Simon Dwight.

Geoff Dwight’s half-brother Elton John was born from his father Stanley’s previous marriage to Sheila Eileen Dwight. Elton was raised primarily by his mother and maternal grandmother. He didn’t have a good father-and-son relationship with Stanley Dwight.

Geoff Dwight is the grandson of Edwin Dwight and Ellen Shirley. Geoff’s childhood experiences have not been disclosed. Despite Geoff’s half-brother Elton John revealing that their father Stanley Dwight was an absentee father who didn’t even see him until two years after his birth, Geoff has said otherwise.

According to Geoff Dwight, “When I was growing up, Elton was always there and we had a lot of fun on family holidays and things like that”, this he told the Times in 2011. “He would come up and visit us almost every weekend and with him being older it was always exciting to hear the stories of what he had been up to.”

Geoff Dwight’s father Stanley had wanted his half-brother Elton John to pursue a career like banking instead of his desire to pursue music. Stanley was a trumpet player with the Bob Millar Band, a semi-professional big band that played at military dances but he didn’t want Elton to be a musician.

According to Daily Mail, Geoff said: ‘My dad loved Elton very much, ­whatever Elton had said about him, and he was never angry with him, and he never, ever, uttered a word against him.’ Geoff’s father Stanley Dwight passed away in December 1991 and Elton didn’t attend his father’s funeral.

Speaking of Geoff Dwight’s education, he had won a scholarship to Ruthin School. He excelled at school and was studying for a degree in engineering design at Warwick University. However, he dropped out after his girlfriend became pregnant, per sources.

Geoff Dwight married his girlfriend and had two children but divorced years later. Meanwhile, Geoff and his half-brother Elton have an estranged relationship.

Personal Life

Geoff Dwight reportedly lives hand to mouth in an alternative community in Ruthin, North Wales. He was self-employed and did odd jobs to support and feed his family. He makes yurts, the circular tents beloved of bohemian types, also builds Celtic harps, and sells firewood.

Musical talent runs through this family. Geoff Dwight organizes music festivals. He went into difficult times and even rented out his home and reportedly built a shed in the garden to live in for a year. He was given a four-year prison sentence for a robbery at age 18.

Geoff Dwight was before the courts again in 2021 and this time, he was fined £200 after breaching coronavirus rules by going to an illegal ‘rave’ with over 200 revelers in the Welsh countryside. He pleaded guilty to possessing the Class A drugs at his home.

Geoff Dwight was fined £120 and ordered to pay £119 in costs. Of the charges against him, Prosecutor Justin Espie disclosed that the magic mushrooms were found at his house during a search.
