Gerald Imes sexually abused his sister Mo’Nique
Mo’Nique revealed in a 2008 Essence magazine interview that her brother Gerald Imes had sexually abused her when they were young. She admitted that this happened from the ages of 7 to 11. She won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.
Mo’Nique took the opportunity and spoke publicly about the abuse at the hands of Gerald Imes, saying she channeled “that monster” when she played the brutal mother in the film. In her Golden Globe acceptance speech, she dedicated her award to victims of abuse:
“I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys — I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched. It’s now time to tell. And it’s OK.”

However, Gerard Imes has confirmed that the abuse happened. He admitted on April 19, 2010, to Oprah that he repeatedly molested his younger sister Mo’Nique when she was just 7 years old. He said,
“I’m here today to first acknowledge what I’ve been in denial for 37 years, and that is I did assault and inappropriately touch my sister in manners that were uncomfortable for her. And for that, I apologize and I’m humbly sorry that those actions had taken place. The hardest part to me was for even to admit to her that I did something wrong. I downplayed it by saying ‘if you think I did something wrong, then I’m sorry.’. I did it, I’m not proud of it.”
Gerard claimed he was using drugs and drinking too much alcohol which might have fueled the sexual abuse he committed towards his younger sister Mo’Nique. He said,
“I started using cocaine, heroine, [and] alcohol at the age of 11. I used these drugs to hide my own pain, to hide my own fears… the drugs allowed me and afforded me the opportunity to hurt my sister.”
Gerard Imes apologized to his sister Mo’Nique. He said, “I’m sorry, Mo’Nique. I’m sorry”. “I betrayed everybody’s trust. I broke that trust. I broke that bond.” However, Mo’Nique declined to be involved in Gerard Imes interview or respond to his apology.
According to Gerard, he hid the shame he felt at having been sexually abused himself and took it out on his sister. However, he went on to sexually abuse another girl and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. After Mo’Nique’s twin boys were born in 2005, she cut off all contact with her brother Gerald.
Gerald Imes said he hopes they could come back together as siblings. “I can only hope by coming forth today … that somewhere down the line … we can come back together as siblings,” he said. “I understand your pain. I truly think, let’s share this together and move on.”
