Harlene Rosen: Truth About Woody Allen’s Ex-wife

Harlene Rosen is the ex-wife of filmmaker, writer, actor, comedian, and musician Woody Allen born Allan Stewart Konigsberg. Harlene’s ex-husband Woody Allen has received many accolades for his work in the entertainment industry. Two of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.

Harlene Rosen was born in the year 1939 but her exact date of birth is not known. According to sources, she is the daughter of Julius Rosen and Judith Rosen. She will be celebrating her 84th birthday in 2023. There isn’t much information about her early life and family background.

Harlene Rosen is said to have worked in a jazz band. She used to be married to Woody Allen. They got into a relationship and after studying each other for some time, they chose to get married. On March 15, 1956, Harlene and Woody were pronounced husband and wife, in a beautiful ceremony.

At the time they got married, Harlene Rosen was just 17 years old while Woody Allen was 20 years old. Their marriage lasted until 1959. After their marriage ended, Woody Allen married Louise Lasser, an actress, television writer, and performing arts teacher and director.

Harlene Rosen Sued Woody Allen

Harlene Rosen decided to take legal action against her ex-husband Woody Allen for defamation as a result of some utterances he made during a television appearance shortly after their divorce. Woody called his ex-wife Harlene “the Dread Mrs. Allen” in his standup act.

Woody Allen’s style of comedy has made it unsurprising to some people that he joked about his first wife Harlene while performing onstage, however, Harlene doesn’t seem to like the idea. In his mid-1960s album Standup Comic, Woody said that he was sued by Harlene because of a joke he made in an interview.

Harlene Rosen was sexually assaulted outside her apartment. According to Woody Allen, the newspapers reported that she had been “violated”. In an interview, Woody said: “Knowing my ex-wife, it probably wasn’t a moving violation.”

In an interview on The Dick Cavett Show, Woody Allen went on to repeat his comments. He revealed that he had been sued for “$1 million”.

Harlene Rosen has stayed totally out of the limelight. She is living somewhere in the United States. She has avoided the cameras and prefers to live a low-key. However, on Woody Allen’s 80th birthday in 2015, Harlene Rosen appeared with a heartfelt message to her ex-husband.

Harlene Rosen is said to have sent the message to the author of Woody’s biography, David Evanier titled Woody. The message said:

‘Wondrous Woody, you inspired me with your enormous energy, creativity, and charisma. I loved going to the movies with you. I loved making music with you… After our teenage summer of love, marriage was difficult. You established a career. I completed four years of college. We supported each other, learned about life, and became adults. There was sadness, tears, laughter, and love.’
