December 7 is the day Ghanaians get to decide the future of the country in the next four years. The election is organized and supervised by the Electoral Commission who has been given the constitutional right to carry out this process.
On 7 December, Ghanaians are not going to elect a president but also 275 parliamentary members for their various constituencies. The election will be conducted at the constituency level of the results will be collated and declared by the Electoral Commission. Note that it is ONLY the Electoral Commission that has the power to declare a winner, not a radio or TV or even a political party.

The NDC and the NPP have dominated the political field in the country even though they are about 22 political parties in the country.
Steps On How To Vote
Before You Get to the Voting Centre
- Before thinking of Voting, you should have already registered for the new Voter’s ID card and your name present in the Voter’s register.
- You must know the constituency and polling station you have registered at.
- Voting will start at 7 am and end at 5 pm on 7th December.
- You must have your ID intact and also have your Mask on. Covid 19 protocols are going to be taking strictly into consideration.
Voting Steps:
- On election day, go to the Polling Station with your Voter ID card and join the queue if any. Please don’t jump the queue
- A polling assistant will check your particulars in the name reference list
- A verification officer will verify your identity as a registered voter with the verification machine.
- You will be issued with a Presidential Ballot paper. Please check to see if it has no marks on it. Also, ensure it has the validating stamp.
- Make your way to the Voting Booth and thumbprint (correctly) your choice of candidate.
- Cast your vote in the Presidential Ballot Box. Please make sure it’s the right box
- Proceed to the next Polling Assistant for a Parliamentary Ballot Paper
- Proceed to the Parliamentary Voting Booth and thumbprint (correctly) your choice of MP
- Cast your ballot in the Parliamentary Voting Box. Please make sure it is in the correct box or it will be rejected.
- Please leave the Polling Station after voting. You can return at 5 pm for the count.
- If you don’t understand anything you can talk to the polling agents.
Who Qualifies To Vote?
Every citizen of and above the age of 18 with a sound mind is qualified to cast a vote. But for you to vote you will need a have a valid voter ID card.
And also note that where you registered is where you vote.
Proxy Voting
Anyone registered voter can apply for a proxy vote. A proxy vote is when you allow a trusted person to vote on your behalf. But you are required to have a valid reason with evidence to apply for this. This is the reasons you can apply a proxy vote:
- Illness or disability: You have an illness or physical condition that prevents you to go to the polling station on election day.
- Employment or military service. Your work prevents you to go to the polling station on election day.
- Education. Your attendance in an educational course prevents you from going to the polling station on election day.
- Absence due to Personal Reasons. You are unable to go to your local polling station on election day. For example, if you are away on holiday.
- Overseas: You are a Ghanaian citizen living overseas.
