Per sources, Jean Goebel worked as a secretary in a private firm, and her sister worked at KTRH, Houston’s CBS radio affiliate. Dan, the news director for KTRH in 1956, was introduced to her by her sister when she applied for a Job as a secretary. Describing their meeting Dan told Closer-“I was working at KTRH radio in Houston and she came to work in a secretarial position. In my case, it was love at first sight. Not only was she so intelligent, she was smoking hot, and it took me a while to convince her to marry me“

A year after their marriage, the couple welcomed their first child, their daughter Robin Rather. The family grew from three to 4 after the birth of Danjack Rather in 1960. When asked about the secret to the success of his marriage, Dan Rather said- “I don’t think there’s any secret about it.” He told Closer– “You have to work at it, and having two wonderful children has helped. Mostly thanks to Jean, they have grown into very good adults.“
He also told the outlet that, when he was covering the Civil Rights Movement, there was a year when he was only home for 31 days, and he was in Vietnam for the better part of 1965–’66, but he never take it for granted because of his wife Jean Goebel.
