Joss Ackland got married to the love of his life Rosemary Kirkcaldy when he was 23 and she 22. The couple shared a great bond and were very supportive of each other. They remained faithful to each other through their long-lasting marriage. The couple got married on the 18th of August 1951, and their marriage lasted for 51 years.
Rosemary Kirkcaldy was also an actress. Their union was not all rosy as there was a time when they struggled. They moved to Lilongwe, Malawi,[when?] where Joss managed a tea plantation for six months but, deciding it was too dangerous, they moved to Cape Town, South Africa.
Though they both obtained steady acting jobs in South Africa, after two years they returned to England in 1957. Joss and Rosemary “were hardly ever apart” despite filming taking Joss to far-flung locations. The couple welcomed seven children into the world. They have thirty-two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Unfortunately, their house in Barnes, southwest London, caught fire and that was in 1963. Joss was on stage at the time so his wife Rosemary who was then five months pregnant with her sixth baby, decided to save their five children but as a result, broke her back when jumping from the bedroom window.
Rosemary Kirkcaldy was told she would miscarry and never walk again. However, she was able to give birth and after 18 months in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, she was able to walk again. In 2000, Rosemary was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Two years after being diagnosed, she died on 25 July 2002, leaving behind her partner and 7 children.

Before her death, Rosemary permitted Joss to publish her diaries. He spent six years editing them. “It kept me close to her,” he says. “Once the book was finished, that’s when real loneliness came in.” He published them in 2009 under the title My Better Half and Me: A love affair that lasted fifty years.
