She is an American lawyer who became a ground-breaking figure in the legal world when she became one of the first female partners of a major law firm. Kate B. O’Brien’s mother was born in 1931 in Worcester, Massachusetts to James Reardon, a laborer, and Ruth Powers Reardon, a teacher who infused a love for education in her children. She enrolled in Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, New York after high school. She also attended Yale Law School, where she was one of only four women in her class, and Harvard Law School as well.

Kate B. O’Brien’s mother was elected for inclusion in Stanford University’s Women’s Legal History Biographical Project and has been written about at length by many scholars and students. She clerked for Chief Justice Raymond Wilkins of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. She secured a job doing generalist work at Ropes & Gray, a prominent firm with offices in both Boston and New York.

She served on numerous local committees, led PTA groups, raised funds, and interviewed applicants for Vassar. She was also dedicated to legal and social justice causes, including helping establish the Peace Corps in 1961 and 1962 by speaking at colleges all around the area to recruit members.

Kate B. O’Brien’s father is Dr. Thomas F. O’Brien, an American epidemiologist, associate professor at the Harvard Medical School, and a director of the infectious disease department at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born on January 28, 1929, in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. He is the son of Thomas Francis O’Brien, Sr., and Esther M. O’Brien.

Kate B. O’Brien’s father attended Harvard Medical School and graduated. He became a medical resident for two years at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston. He also became a Harvard University Mosley Fellow for a year at Cambridge University, England, and then an active duty Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years.

He became a research fellow in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School also for two years before a final year as a senior medical resident at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He was given a full scholarship to Harvard Medical School, receiving his MD in 1954.

Kate B. O’Brien’s father has been publishing and conducting major medical research since the year 1959 and his recent research interests are anti-bacterial agents, cross-infection, microbial drug resistance, Enterobacteriaceae, R-factors, world health, and bacteria.

He got appointed the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Director of the Microbiology Laboratory. He also joined the committee of a project called New Directions in the Study of Antimicrobial Therapeutics: New Classes of Antimicrobials. His laboratory was selected as the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for the Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance and the development of software called WHONET.
