Keith’s parents were young when they got married. At the time they married, his mother Diane Wuornos was just 14 years old while his father Leo Pittman was 18 years old. Their wedding ceremony happened on June 3, 1954.

Keith Wuornos is his parents’ oldest child. Keith has a biological younger sister, Aileen Carol Pittman. Aileen was born on February 29, 1956, in Rochester, Michigan, U.S. Keith’s mother filed for a divorce from his father after less than two years of marriage. His father Leo Pittman committed suicide by hanged himself in prison where he was doing life for kidnapping and raping a 7-year-old girl.

Leo Pittman had schizophrenia. He died on January 30, 1969, in Lansing, Leavenworth County, Kansas, USA. Keith Wuornos’ mother Diane Wuornos abandoned Keith and his little sister Aileen Wuornos. She left her children with their maternal grandparents, Lauri Wuornos, and Britta Wuornos. Lauri and Britta Wuornos were both alcoholics. They legally adopted Keith and Aileen on March 18, 1960.

Keith’s sister Aileen said that as a child, she was beaten up and sexually assaulted by their grandfather. Keith Wuornos and Aileen Wuornos engaged in sexual activities. The siblings were close to each other. They attended school like other kids. It is unknown if Keith was able to complete school but his sister Aileen didn’t. Aileen dropped out of school after she became pregnant at age 14 by being raped by a family friend. She gave birth to her only child, a son at a home for unwed mothers on March 23, 1971.

Aileen Wuornos’ son was placed for adoption. She allegedly named her child Keith and the name made people assumed that her brother Keith Wuornos was the father of her child but she was actually raped and impregnated by a friend of her grandfather’s. Following her grandmother’s death, Aileen was kicked out of the house by her grandfather.

Aileen lived in the woods and supported herself through prostitution. Unlike Aileen who was frequently in trouble with the law, Keith Wuornos is believed to have lived a good life. His life insurance was worth $10,000 at the time of his death which means, he had a job and did very well for himself. His life insurance of $10,000 was given to Aileen but the money was gone in two months.

Aileen spent the money by buying luxuries including a car, which she wrecked shortly afterward, and paying a fine of $105 for drunk driving. Aileen moved to Florida to work as a prostitute. She committed felonies and misdemeanors including arrests for illegal possession of a firearm, forgery, assault, and robbery. She ended up killing (by shooting) and robbing seven of her male clients.

Aileen Wuornos said her clients had either raped or attempted to rape her, and that she killed them in self-defense. She confessed to the killing.

“I killed those men”, she wrote, “robbed them as cold as ice. And I’d do it again, too. There’s no chance in keeping me alive or anything, because I’d kill again. I have hate crawling through my system … I am so sick of hearing this ‘she’s crazy’ stuff. I’ve been evaluated so many times. I’m competent, sane, and I’m trying to tell the truth. I’m one who seriously hates human life and would kill again.”

Aileen was sentenced to death for six of the murders. She was executed on October 9, 2002, by lethal injection. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered beneath a tree in her native Michigan by her childhood friend Dawn Botkins.
