Laura Turner Seydel is an international environmental advocate and eco-living expert. She is also the daughter of Ted Turner. Laura Turner’s father is a celebrated American broadcasting entrepreneur. Her father founded the Cable News Network (CNN), the first 24-hour cable news channel. Laura Turner Seydel was born in July 1961 in the United States of America. As of 2023, he is 62 years old. She is the first child of  Ted Turner and his first wife Julia Gale Nye. Laura is followed closely by her brother Robert Edward Turner IV. She also has three half-siblings- Jennie Turner, Beau Turner, and Rhett Turner.

Laura Turner is a Climate Hero

After a childhood spent taking quick showers, turning off lights, and adventuring in nature as much as possible, Laura has taken those lessons to heart with a series of organizations and initiatives all meant to help out the planet. Ted Turner’s daughter revealed on her website– “I inherited my passion for taking care of the planet from my dad, Ted Turner, the original Captain Planet. When my siblings and I were children, my father instilled environmental stewardship into us every chance he got.“

“Taking care of the environment is in my DNA,” she told PEOPLE in an interview. “We composted, weeded the yard instead of using chemicals, and my dad took us around our neighborhood to pick up trash. We learned from him that you take action. You don’t let other people do the work for you.“

Laura’s first job out of college was working with Greenpeace, and since then, she’s gone on to found Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Mothers and Others for Clean Air, while also serving as the chair of the Captain Planet Foundation, which Dad started in 1991.

Today, she also works with organizations that address urgent challenges affecting our life support system: our air, water, land, food, biodiversity, and climate.

As chair of the Captain Planet Foundation, Laura Turner Seydel helps guide the organization in empowering and engaging youth to become the next generation of environmental stewards through hands-on experiential learning projects. she also serves on the board of the Children & Nature Network, which has the mission of helping all children grow up realizing the many benefits that exposure to nature provides.

“It’s hard to focus on just one thing, there are so many holes in the dike,” she told PEOPLE. Laura Turner Seydel and her husband Rutherford first launched Chattahoochee Riverkeeper in 1994 as a means of cleaning up the waterway near their home in Atlanta, and today, the group runs several cleanups per year.

She and her family are also dedicated to conservation and have 15 ranches on which they’re using bison to help regenerate the soil. Laura Turner Seydel and her husband moved into the first LEED-certified gold residence in the U.S. in 2007, complete with geothermal heating and wallpaper made from recycled newspapers.

As a mother, Laura is passing her efforts on to her three children: John R., who works as the sustainability director for the city of Atlanta; Vasser, the campaign director for the Deep Seabed Mining Project; and Laura “LE” Elizabeth, who works in the music industry.
