Leeyan Granger’s Husband No Longer Attends Church
Leeyan Granger’s husband Ted Neeley is an American singer, actor, musician, composer, and record producer who was born on September 20, 1943, in Ranger, Texas, U.S. He gained wide public attention when he played the title role in Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), a role for which he was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and has reprised numerous times.
Ted Neeley reportedly does not attend church anymore but he is steeped in scripture. Speaking about the first time he took the stage to play Jesus, he said: “It was terrifying. The way it was staged, the director had built what looks like a little triangular mountain, so that the audience could see each person’s face around Jesus during his speech for “The Last Supper.”
He added: “And it was set up so that I had to be able to be on my knees on that while I was singing “Gethsemane,” which came after. The show went beautifully up to that point. And I sang “Gethsemane,” and I was just amazed because the audience went crazy. And during this applause, I slid down the little mountain onto the floor! And then the audience stopped for a moment. And then this laughter started. And I got up and they applauded again.”
Ted Neeley admitted that it scares him when people say that they see his face when they think of Jesus. “There are three generations of people who tell me, when they think of Jesus, they see my face. That scares me! I know Jesus was much more handsome, much taller” he said. “And I keep saying: I’m a rock n roll drummer from Texas who screams high notes and that’s a character I get to play.”
During an interview with KPCC, Ted Neeley confessed that he didn’t want to play Jesus in the beginning. He said: “Oh yeah, yes! Every night, you hear that guitar go “raaaarrrr, b-b-errrr!” and then we do the overture and Judas goes ‘My mind is clearer now, at last…’ And I wanna go, ‘JEEEEESUS!’ — but I can’t!
“I’m back there going, Hmmm, how would I do that if I were doing that? I thought it would be a great way to present a new character. So I auditioned — and the director said ‘that was wonderful, but I’d like you to sing the other guy.’”
