His career began in television, but he did appear in a few films, including an uncredited role in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke. He appeared in a number of television shows, rising to the level of featured guest star in The Big Valley (where he played a Harvard-educated Native American with a penchant for fighting) and Mod Squad (where he played an illiterate vending machine robber).
He played the title character in Telly Savalas’ 1971 television film Mongo’s Back in Town. Baker’s physical prowess and stereotypical Texas drawl would be ideal in Westerns, both on film and television, standing at 6’2″ (189 cm). Joe Baker made an appearance in the TV show “Honey West” as truckdriver Rocky Hansen in his starting career.
