Who Is Pierce Brosnan’s Mother?
Mary May Smith is widely known as the mother of Pierce Brosnan. Mary was born on April 3, 1932. She is 91 years old as of 2023. Her parents are Kathleen Smith and Philip Smith. She may not be the only child of her parents but details of her siblings are unknown. There isn’t much information about her formative years and family.
Mary May Smith gave birth to her only child, Pierce Brendan Brosnan on 16 May 1953, in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. She and carpenter Thomas Brosnan are the parents of Pierce. Thomas abandoned Mary May Smith and their then-infant Pierce Brosnan, who would grow up without his father. “There were no siblings,” Pierce said.
“I was an only child from a fractured family. My father took off for the hills very early.” Mary decided to move to London to work as a nurse. She had less contact with her son. Her son Pierce was raised by his maternal grandparents (Mary’s parents), Philip and Kathleen Smith. Mary May “came home once a year, twice a year.”
Both Philip and Kathleen passed away. Pierce lived with an aunt and uncle before eventually staying in a boarding house run by a woman called Eileen. Pierce said, “I was sent to live with a woman named Eileen, who had a place in a poor part of town. She had her own children and I moved upstairs with the lodgers, all grown men with jobs. One worked in the mill. One worked in a bank.”

“The three lodgers stayed in a long room with iron beds with old mattresses. At the end of the room, there was my little bed, with a curtain around it, so the light wouldn’t shine in when the older guys came home.” Mary May Smith had met and married William Carmichael.
Mary’s son Pierce Brosnan moved to Scotland from Ireland to live with his mother and her husband William at their home in Longniddry. Pierce has described his mother as someone who “was very courageous.” Pierce said, “She took the bold steps to go away and be a nurse in England. Basically wanting a better life for her and myself.”
Pierce Brosnan said his mother Mary was very supportive when he decided to get into the film industry. “When, as a young teenager, I told my mother that I wanted to be an actor, she was extremely supportive of that. She wholeheartedly said: ‘Follow your dreams,’” Pierce said. The mother and son are very close to each other.
Pierce has often spoken of the impact his mom has had on his life. He once said his mother is “a great lady, and she’s always been there for me. She’s my mother, and I love her dearly.” Most recently on Mother’s Day, Pierce Brosnan expressed his love for his mom as he posted photos of himself and his mother and wrote, Happy Mother’s Day, I love you Mum!
