“Yesterday was a very sad day. We lost our dad. Jack Evans. He was funny, handsome, and loved by all. Dad, I will miss you so much. And love you always. R.I.P.” Per PEOPLE, Jack Evans began showing signs of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2017 and the next year, he entered an assisted living home in Dallas, Texas.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Sara Evans said: “My brother Matt called me and said it wasn’t looking good at all and that they didn’t think Dad was going to make it through the night. Then I just started freaking out, got in my car, and drove around and screamed and begged God not to take him yet.”
“It was never not fun to be with him and hang out with him. He had such a quick wit. He loved the simple things in life. And he was absolutely gorgeous. That was the thing that everybody would talk about when I was growing up. ‘Oh my gosh, your dad is so handsome and so cute.’”
“I was always so proud of him not just for his heart and his brain and how he loved us, but I was always like, ‘Yeah, my dad is handsome.” Sara Evans said her father was “so proud of all of us and our music.” Sara was affected by her father’s death. She said, “We didn’t have a lot of warning.”
“My stepmother texted us all on Saturday night the 21st and said my dad was not looking well. They thought that somebody might have COVID-19. They did mass testing throughout the whole facility. He didn’t have COVID-19 so that wasn’t it, but they think he might have gotten pneumonia.”
Even one year after Jack Evans passed away, Sara Evans told PEOPLE: “I can’t believe it’s been a year. It was horrible because we were sort of estranged my whole life. And then I wasn’t able to have any real closure with him before he lost his mental abilities. And so, the most devastating aspect of it was just that we weren’t able to clear anything up. And now, he’s just gone.”

It was like one day he was there and the next day he was not making sense. He started making these strange noises and it was just really hard because you just didn’t know exactly what he knew, you know?”
“I had no way to know, is he aware of all this? It’s just a really scary and horrible disease.” Sara partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association as part of their “Music Moments” campaign in which she recorded a brand-new version of her hit “A Little Bit Stronger.”
