According to sources, After World War II, Whitmore was studying acting at the American Theatre Wing and the Actors Studio in New York and it was during this time that the actor met his first wife, Mygatt. The two dated for some time before calling in love and eventually got married. The couple tied the knot in 1947 in a beautiful wedding ceremony in the presence of their friends, families, and loved ones.
They had three sons before their divorce in 1971. Their children are James Whitmore Jr., Stephen Whitmore, and Daniel Whitmore. In 1979, Whitmore and Mygatt found themselves once again in each other’s arms after his marriage with actress Audra Lindley came to an end, but they divorced again after two years and he got married to actress and author Noreen Nash.

Nancy Mygatt and James Whitmore’s eldest son James Whitmore Jr. also followed in the footsteps of his father. He is best known for his roles as Captain Jim Gutterman on the television program Baa Baa Black Sheep, Freddie Beamer in The Rockford Files (1977–1979), and Sgt Bernie Terwilliger in Hunter (1984–1986), and since the 1980s as a prolific television director. He is now married to Salesha Ali. They have a son whose name is James Whitmore III.

Their second son, Stephen became the public spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The youngest son, Daniel, was a Forest Service Snow Ranger and firefighter before he launched his own construction company. It seems the couple’s children are doing well in their respective fields.
Her husband died in 2009
Nancy Mygatt’s ex-husband Whitmore was diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2008. He died from the disease at the age of 87 on February 6, 2009, at his Malibu, California home. The former lovers did have a great time. The two were spotted leaving an event; circa 1960 in New York.
