Who Was Cheech Marin’s Father, Oscar Marin?

Oscar Marin was welcomed into the world on March 20, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, United States. His parent’s names are Victor Emiliano Marin and Maria Dolores Garcia. He is one of six children. He was the brother of Victor A. Marín, Viola Eleanor Randall and Robert Marín and the half-brother of Ana María García and Uvaldina Santoyo.

There’s little information about Oscar Marin’s life as a child, relatives, and education. He reportedly remained an Angeleno all his life, sharing fascinating stories of how the city has changed over his 93 years. He was a police officer with The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). In addition to being an LAPD police officer, he was a Criminal Justice Professor.

Oscar Marin taught Administration of Justice to scores of students entering law enforcement during his 14-year career as an educator at both Los Angeles Valley College and Los Angeles Mission College. He had served his country in the Navy during World War II. During his 28-year career with the LAPD, he served at different divisions across Los Angeles, retiring as a Detective III.

As a member of the Del Air Rockhounds Education Team, Oscar Marin taught elementary students about rocks and fossils. He met and married Elsa Marin (née Meza) (1923–2010). Elsa worked as a secretary. Oscar had eight children including a set of twins, according to a source. On July 13, 1946, he and his wife Elsa welcomed a son.

Their son is Richard Anthony “Cheech” Marin. Cheech Marin was born with a cleft lip but it was repaired surgically. Cheech has become a well-known comedian, actor, director, writer, musician, art collector, activist, and humanitarian. His nickname “Cheech” is derived from chicharron, a spicy fried pork skin snack.

Cheech Marin once attributed the nickname to his uncle during an interview. He said: “I came home from the hospital, I was like a couple of days old or something, my uncle came over and he looked in the crib and he said [in Spanish], ‘Ay, parece un chicharrón.’ Looks like a little chicharrón, you know?”

Oscar Marin and his family moved to Granada Hills, California, in the 1950s. Regarding Oscar and Elsa’s marriage, certain details are not available. It is unknown if they remained married or got divorced. Oscar “enjoyed a full life pursuing his many interests; from watching cop dramas to fishing, adventuring, joking and always whistling a tune or making up a funny song,” per a source.
