Rosie Bently’s father is Jack Bentley. Her father was an English trombonist, journalist, and scriptwriter. He is known for playing trombone as part of the brass section of Jack Hylton’s Orchestra and Ted Heath’s big band from 1937 until the mid-1950s before becoming the show business editor of the Sunday Mirror newspaper.

Bentley married actress Wendy Craig in Chelsea, London in 1955. The two meet at a party given by the West End star Bobby Howes. She was more than twenty years his junior. Aside from Rosie, the couple also had two sons. Her brothers- Alaster (later principal oboist for the Birmingham Royal Ballet Sinfonia) and (as the result of an affair with John Mortimer), Ross, an IT consultant.

In 2004, it was revealed that Craig’s second son Ross Bentley was the offspring of her short affair with John Mortimer. In the same year, having heard that the secret was out, Rosie Bently’s mother Wendy visited Mortimer to reveal formally that their affair had resulted in a son, then 42.

Jack Bentley agreed to bring up the boy as his own and Ross was told the identity of his biological father when he was old enough to understand. In the film adaptation of The Pumpkin Eater (1964), the character based on Bentley (John Conway) was played by James Mason.

Even though she is the daughter of a famous personality, Rosie Bently has been very private about her life. She has not made the news or any headlines in years. It is unclear where she is and exactly what she is up to. Her mother Craig lived and still lives in Cookham in Berkshire. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to drama and charity.

In 2010, Wendy also paid tribute to her late husband during an interview with The Daily Express, saying: “He was a tower of strength who was always there for me; who realised how fragile I could be and would hold my hand and say: ‘Come on, you can do it.’ His influence over me continues. “I don’t mean I feel his presence but I knew him so well I know the kind of advice he would give me.” Rosie Bently’s father passed away on  22 April 1994. Jack Bentley died due to prostate cancer.
