Rossana Maiorca is a Freedive and the daughter of Enzo Maiorca. Rossana Maiorca’s father, Enzo was an Italian free diver who held several world freediving records. He was the first to dive to a depth of 50 meters (164 feet) without scuba gear or help from a breathing apparatus. Italian media dubbed Maiorca the “lord of the abysses.”

Rossana Maiorca was born in 1960 in Veneto to her parents Enzo Maiorca and Maria Gibino. She is an Italian freediver who was several times a world record holder for freediving immersion. In 1989, she achieved the first single-fin world record in Syracuse. She was not the only child of the famous diver. Rossana has a sister Patrizia Maiorca who is also a famous freediver. The sisters started freediving for fun at a young age. Enzo and Patrizia were devout vegetarians.
Rossana Maiorca is known for holding almost a dozen records to her name. She held the record for 1979 dive to -40 m in constant weight in Syracuse and in 1986, she also dove to -69 m in variable weight in Syracuse. Also in 1990, she dove to -58 m in constant weight and she covered 125 m in dynamic apnea in Italy. The Italian former freediver was a world record holder for freediving several times. In 1989, she achieved the first world record in monofin in Syracuse.
Enzo Maiorca and his daughters saved a dolphin
According to The Gazette, Rossana, her father, and sister rescued a trapped dolphin, and then watched as it gave birth. According to the outlet, while the family was diving in the Mediterranean Enzo was in the water preparing to dive when he felt a nudge on his back and turned to see a male dolphin beckoning to him.
He dove after the dolphin and about 40 feet meters down, the dolphin led him to his mate, who had become entangled in a fishing net and was almost drowning. He quickly surfaced to get diving knives and together with Rossana and her sister, Patrizia they freed the dolphin and helped her to the surface.
The famous recalls to the outlet: “As soon as she was on the surface, after breathing out foam and blood, she gave birth to a dolphin calf under the watchful eyes of her mate.”
What happened to Rossana Maiorca; Cause of Death
Rossana Maiorca sadly died on January 7, 2005, in Mestre, a part of the municipality of Venice at the age of 45. The cause of her death was revealed to be cancer but the specific cancer that caused her death has not been made public.

Enzo Maiorca was born on June 21, 1931, and passed away on Nov. 13, 2016. Rossana Maiorca‘s father Enzo learned to swim at age 4 and soon began to dive, although expressing great fear of the sea.
Enzo Maiorca, is also often nicknamed ‘the Lord of the Deep’ due to his numerous depth records. In 1960, Maiorca defeated the Brazilian Amerigo Santarelli 45 meters underwater, to then beat him once again at a rematch, reaching 49 meters. The French Jacques Mayol was also among his many rivals throughout the years, having competed against him the most times for the world record.

The friendship and rivalry between Mayol and Maiorca were depicted in the heavily fictionalized 1988 film ‘Le Grand Bleu’ by French director Luc Besson.

Following his diving career, Rossana Maiorca‘s father Enzo Maiorca became involved in politics and was elected to the Senate for the Alleanza Nazionale party from 1994 to 1996.
