Sarah’s mother was a former Prime Minister of Israel while her father was a sign painter and socialist.
Sarah Meyerson’s parents were married on December 24, 1917, in a beautiful wedding ceremony. They remained married until Sarah’s father Morris passed away on 25 May 1951. Sarah’s parents were never divorced but they had separated at some point in their marriage. Sarah Meyerson has a brother called Menachem Meyerson.
Menachem was born in the year 1924 in Jerusalem. He was a professional cellist. Menachem studied at the Israel Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music. He died on 14 December 2014 in Tel Aviv. “Among other things, she did this when she was a child, and her mother went on a mission in the United States in 1932, and in Moscow, where she served as a wireless station operator in the service of Golda, who at the time worked at the embassy there.” Sarah and her mother Golda are said to have made efforts to “bridge the physical distance between them.”
When Sarah Meyerson was 18 and had completed her studies at the Tel Aviv School of Education, she settled in Kibbutz Revivim in the Negev, then one of the southernmost settlements in Israel. At the time, her mother Golda Meir had “bought a house in a kibbutz, and would travel almost every weekend to spend time with her daughter, both as prime minister and when she was foreign minister,” the relative said.
On the eve of the end of the mandate, the British commissioner suggested to Golda Meir to move Sarah from Revivim, fearing that the kibbutz would fall into the hands of the Egyptians. According to Sarah’s relative who asked to remain anonymous, “Sarah had very strong opinions, especially when it came to social affairs.”
“She was a little more left-wing socially, and claimed that Golda did not pay enough attention to society in Israel compared to her attitude to foreign and security affairs.” The relative added that the arguments between the two intensified after the “Black Panthers” affair exploded, but he emphasized that on the other hand, Sara was very proud of the National Insurance Law and other social laws passed by her mother.
The relative said that Sarah and her brother Menachem supported their mother taking over the prime ministership in 1969, and believed that she should continue for another term, even though she wanted to retire on the eve of the elections in 1973. “In hindsight, they all regretted this decision.
Their family was very warm, and Golda always used to consult her relatives when she was about to decide on significant steps.” The relative made it known that Sarah Meyerson and her mother Golda Meir had a relationship that he wishes for every family. “Sarah respected her mother and her path for all that that implies.”
