Stellina Baker: Truth About Josephine Baker’s daughter

Stellina Baker is the daughter of Josephine Baker. Stellina Baker’s mother Josephine was an American-born French dancer, singer, and actress who established a career centered primarily in Europe, mostly in her adopted France. She was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film Siren of the Tropics, directed by Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant.

 Stellina Baker is a Moroccan-born adopted by Josephine Baker. She was part of the two daughters and and 10 sons. The other daughter is Marianne Baker who was a French-born and the 10 sons are Korean-born Jeannot (or Janot), Japanese-born Akio, Colombian-born Luis, Finnish-born Jari (now Jarry), French-born Jean-Claude, Noël and Moïse, Algerian-born Brahim (later Brian), Ivorian-born Koffi, and Venezuelan-born Mara.

According to the theconversation, Stellina was adopted after she has being abandoned at birth in France by a Moroccan friend of Baker’s. She became the second daughter and the 12th child of the “Rainbow Tribe”.

Stellina Baker was part of the Rainbow Tribe. During her mother, Josephine Baker’s participation in the civil rights movement, she wanted to prove that “children of different ethnicities and religions could still be brothers”. With this in mind she began to adopt children, forming a family which she often referred to as “The Rainbow Tribe”.

Josphine Baker often took the children with her cross-country, and when they were at Château des Milandes, she arranged tours so visitors could walk the grounds and see how natural and happy the children were. Stellina and her sibling singing and dancing for the audience.

 Stellina Baker lived with her mother, her other siblings and an enormous staff in the château in Dordogne, France, with her fourth husband, Jo Bouillon.  In 1968, her mother lost the château owing to unpaid debts; but then Princess Grace came to her aid offering her an apartment in Roquebrune, near Monaco. She died at the age of 68, on 12 April 1975. She was in a coma after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. 

When Stelina Baker’s mother passed away in 1975, her oldest siblings were in their 20s, some already married with children. Stellina, aged just eleven at the time, was the only one still living permanently with her mother. In their adulthood, the rainbow children have recounted the golden years of their tribe, both in interviews and through their own writing.

Where is Stelina Baker now?

Much is not known about where she is now. They are all living a very private life away from the media. According to theconversation, Eight of the twelve have had children themselves, but none have adopted any children as their mother did.
