Who is Gloria Steinem’s elder?

Susanne Steinem Patch was a gem expert and staff lawyer at the Federal Trade Commission. She was born on February 19, 1925, to her parents  Ruth Nuneviller and Leo Steinem. After their parents’ called their marriage a quit and their mother’s health issues, Susanne was an important support for her younger sister, Gloria Steinem. Susanne Steinem is a graduate of Smith College where she earned her undergraduate degree in 1946.

She paused her education to start a family and at the age of 50 and after raising six children, Gloria Steinem’s elder sister returned to school to earn her law degree from Antioch School of Law in 1978 and began practicing.

Before she became a lawyer, Susanne was a gem expert. Susanne Steinem worked at a jewelry store during college and became fascinated by gems. She gained experience in the industry while working as a buyer in New York and Washington, D.C.

Susanne Steinem Patch lectured on gemology and hosted a local television show on the subject. In the 1970s, she worked as a docent in the Smithsonian Institution’s Halls of Gems and Minerals and Physical Geology. Susanne wrote a book about the Hope Diamond, Blue Mystery: The Story of the Hope Diamond (1976), and served as a technical consultant for several documentaries and exhibits.

After Law school, Gloria Steinem’s sister became a staff attorney at the Federal Trade Commission and was assigned to the Bureau of Consumer Protection from 1980 to 1994, where she oversaw regulations on jewelry, watches, and metallic watchbands. She went on to become a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the American Society of Jewelry Historians, and the Mineralogical Society in Washington.

Aside from being a Lawyer and Gem expert, Susanne was the co-founder of her neighborhood food co-op and was also engaged in school issues in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Susanne Steinem Patch tied the knot in 1954 with patent attorney, Robert J. Patch. The couple had six children- including a set of twins- which she raised while taking care of her mother Ruth Nuneviller. Five years after her parents got married, Susanne’s mother was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown which left her with delusional fantasies that occasionally turned violent.

Her mother changed changed “from an energetic, fun-loving, book-loving” woman into “someone who was afraid to be alone, who could not hang on to reality long enough to hold a job, and who could rarely concentrate enough to read a book.” She spent some time in and out of sanatoriums for the mentally ill.

How did Gloria Steinem’s sister die?

Susanne Steinem Patch passed away on November 2, 2007, in Bethesda, Maryland, United States. She was 82 years old at the time of his death. Per sources, Gloria Steinem’s sister Susanne died after a stroke. Their father died in 1961 in a car accident and their mother also passed away in July 1981.
