Terry O’Neill was a British photographer known for his distinctive snapshot. He was also the former husband of American actress Dorothy Faye Dunaway. Terry’s ex-wife Faye Dunaway is known for her roles in films such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Arrangement, and Chinatown among others. She has won awards including an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a BAFTA Award.

Terry O’Neill was born Terence Patrick O’Neill, on 30 July 1938, in Romford, Essex, England to Irish parents. Leonard O’Neill and Josephine O’Neill were his parents. He was raised in Heston, London. He was a professional photographer. He reportedly left school hoping to be a jazz drummer but he ended up working as a photographer.
Per the Guardian, Terry originally planned to become a priest before being told he “had too many questions and not enough belief”. He started his career working in a photographic unit for an airline at London’s Heathrow Airport. He worked on Fleet Street with The Daily Sketch in 1959 and eventually landed his first professional job which was to photograph actor and director Laurence Olivier.
According to his bio on his website, “O’Neill realised that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale; he began chronicling the emerging faces of the film, fashion, and music scenes that would go on to define the Swinging Sixties.” He photographed from celebrities to members of the British royal family and prominent politicians.
Terry O’Neill was known for documenting the fashions, styles, and celebrities of the 1960s. He is known for capturing images of the Queen, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Amy Winehouse, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and many more.

Terry also photographed Faye Dunaway, whom he married. His photographs of singer, pianist, and composer Elton John are among his best-known. Even a selection of them appeared in the 2008 book Eltonography. His photographs capture his subjects candidly or in unconventional settings. Some of his works have been displayed in national art galleries and private collections worldwide.
Terry’s work has been featured in several exhibitions. According to his website, by 1965, Terry O’Neill was being “regularly commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world.” He was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 and the Society’s Centenary Medal in 2011.
Terry O’Neill’s work is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. He served as an executive producer of “Mommie Dearest” (1981). He worked as a still photographer for “Aria” (1987). Terry O’Neill was married three times to three different women. He married actress Vera Day on November 28, 1963. They had two children together, Keegan Alexander and Sarah Jane. They got divorced in 1976. He then married actress Faye Dunaway in 1982. They had a son Liam Dunaway O’Neill. Terry revealed that Liam was adopted.
Terry and Faye’s marriage ended on March 26, 1987. Terry then married former model agency executive Laraine Ashton in 2001. They remained married until his death.

Terry O’Neill was killed by prostate cancer. He died on 16 November 2019, at age 81, in London, England. He died after he was awarded a CBE for his photography services. “It is with a heavy heart that Iconic Images announces the passing of Terence ‘Terry’ O’Neill, CBE,” a spokeswoman for his agency said. “As one of the most iconic photographers of the last 60 years, his legendary pictures will forever remain imprinted in our memories, as well as in our hearts and minds.”
