Teruko Nakagami is the third wife of an American actor, voice actor, and artist Billy Dee Williams. She is a Japanese American who was born in Chicago. She was born Irene, but later she changed her name to Teruko after meeting musician Wayne Shorter.
Nakagami was previously married to American jazz saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, who rose to fame in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Teruko Nakagami and her now ex-husband Wayne Shorter met in 1961.
Nakagami and Wayne Shorter got married and they gave birth to a daughter, named Miyako Shorter, born in 1962. The couple later got separated in 1964. Wayne Shorter’s configurations are copyrighted as “Miyako Music”. Wayne Shorter dedicated “Miyako” and “Infant Eyes” to his daughter, Miyako Shorter.
