Most developed nations are ranked to be the happiest this is due to the conducive life the people in the country enjoy and also how easy it is to access human needs and amenities that will make one’s life better. Saddest countries on the other hand struggle to acquire basic amenities and are often destroyed with either human conflict, or unfair distribution of resources. The decline of an economy, government negligence, and the abuse of human rights are factors that make citizens unhappy.
World Happiness Report (WHR) releases yearly, ranking countries on how happy or sad they are. WHR bases its ranking on six variables. These are income, freedom, trust, healthy life expectancy, social support, and generosity. The first time the report was made public was in 2012. Most of the saddest countries are from Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia. In this write up the focus will be on Africa. Let see the list
The saddest countries in the world rankings are not meant to prejudice nationals but to encourage governments and citizens to improve where they have failed to have a better life.

- South Sudan: South Sudan is considered one of the saddest in Africa. The central African country has been bleeding because of civil wars. After decades of conflict and loss of lives, South Sudan separated from Sudan in 2011. This was decided after the majority of the people voted for a split in a referendum.
- Central African Republic (CAR): The Central African Republic I can say is one of the many African countries with large amounts of minerals and other natural resources. This country Francophone country is well known for its numerous mineral deposits, including uranium reserves, crude oil, gold, and diamonds. Despite the many resources, the Central African Republic is still classified as a struggling economy. CAR has also experienced internal battles involving the government, rebels, and militias. These conflicts were mostly fueled by the demand for power and sometimes religious intolerance.
- Tanzania: Tanzania is the home to Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro, and a lot of exotic wildlife. Although the country is also well known to have some of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Africa, Unfortunately, the country still grapples with poverty, diseases, and poor government policies.
- Rwanda: Rwanda is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. The small nation has witnessed massive progress since the 1994 genocide which had a lot of effect on the country. Scars of the genocide continue to be felt by many Rwandese people today. The war resulted in the death of 1 million Rwandese people. The mass killings of Tutsis, Twas, and a few Hutus are among the ugliest sides of the country’s history. Rwanda however, rose after the unfortunate killings and is building a powerhouse image in Africa.
- Malawi: Malawi has a population of about 18 million. Malawi is popularly known for Lake Malawi, wildlife, and rich culture. Lake Malawi is a source of income for many citizens thanks to the fishing that happens and touring around the lake. Many Malawians however, suffer from hardships due to government neglect, diseases, and corruption. The agriculture sector has had problems for the longest time, with the country experiencing low crop outputs and continuous drought in many parts of the country.
