Kala Brown is identified as the lady who came to the limelight in 2016 when security forces rescued her from a shipping container. Kala Brown was in a romantic relationship with a man named Charlie Carver, who had just gone through a divorce. The duo was reported missing. On 3rd September, Charlie’s mother filed a report telling the police she hadn’t heard from her son Charlie in a long time. Kala Brown’s friend Leah Miller tried reaching Kala but to no avail.

Kala Brown and Charlie Carver’s apartment appeared like it hadn’t been used for a while. Kala’s mother Bobbie Newsome, told the authorities that Kala and Charles’ dog was found in their apartment without food or water. She said, “That dog is her baby. She’d never leave him like that.” Kala was reported missing on September 5.

A friend of Charles reported that he was receiving strange Facebook messages from Charles’ account asking for money for drugs. The friend assumed it was bizarre because she had never known Charles to be a user of drugs. Charlie’s Facebook page also contained posts revealing that he and Kala are fine, married, and have purchased a new house. The authorities began investigating the case.

The authorities accessed Kala and Charles’ Facebook accounts and found messages between them about working on Todd’s property on August 31, 2016, the same day Charles’ mother received the last text message from him. Kala and Charlie’s phones were tracked by the authorities and it led them to the property under Todd Kohlhepp’s name.

Kala knew the man named Todd as a real estate broker. Todd employed Kala and Charles to work on his 95-acre property in rural South Carolina. On August 31, 2016, Todd called in Kala and Charles to do landscaping work on his farm. The authorities went to Todd’s property and heard slamming noises coming from a shipping container.

Kala was found locked inside a container with chains around her neck and ankles. Kala’s boyfriend, Charlie was not found. Later, Kala said that when they got to the property, Todd asked them to wait outside. He came out after a few minutes with a gun in hand. Todd shot Charlie three times in the chest with a gun and she was handcuffed and kept captive.

Todd revealed how he managed to get rid of Charlie’s car by spray painting it and covering it with the help of tree branches. Kala Brown was fed once a day during the evening time at 6 PM when she was imprisoned by Todd. Kala said that Todd would show her the graves on his property, intimidating them not to escape but if she tries he will kill her in the same way.

Kala said in an interview that she was also raped every day. Todd’s mother stated that Todd did not want to hurt Kala and did not abuse Kala at all. Todd’s crimes were caught up to him and he went ahead to confess to seven murders including a quadruple homicide from over a decade prior. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Kala Brown moved on and was in a relationship with a guy named Adam Mayson. Kala’s fiancé, Adam died of a self-inflicted stab wound to his chest. Doctors tried to save him but he went into cardiac arrest and died. In a statement released by Kala, she said,

“I am heartbroken today over the loss of my fiancé. Adam was a true gift from God. He brought me great happiness and comfort during a very dark time.
