According to multiple sources, casting an actor to play Harry Potter was a big challenge that brought in about 5000 auditions and none of them felt right for the role. Director Chris Columbus saw the young Daniel Radcliffe in David Copperfield (1999) and showed it to the casting director, recommending him for the role.
That was when the Casting Director revealed they wouldn’t get their hands on him because his parents want him to focus on his schoolwork and not acting, as well as all the attention he’d get. They went ahead and interviewed Harry Potter aspirants of different nationalities all over the world and still hadn’t found him.
The Casting Director eventually got frustrated with Columbus because he had his heart set on the young actor from the Copperfield show. By sheer coincidence, the Philosopher’s Stone’s producer and screenwriter went to the theatre and sat in the front row with Alan Radcliffe. So they talked and slowly persuaded him to cast Radcliffe.
