Bob Dylan is one of the most famous musicians in the world. The American singer-songwriter has been a major figure in popular culture over his 60-year career. Generally regarded as the Shakespeare of his generation, Dylan sold tens of millions of albums, wrote more than 500 songs recorded by more than 2,000 artists, performed all over the world, and set the standard for lyric writing.

The singer is the recipient of numerous accolades including a Pullitzer, ten Grammys, the Prince of Asturias Award, an Academy Award for Best Song, and the Order of the Légion d’Honneur, among many, many others. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.

However, the singer has previously been married twice as well as having some very public relationships, despite his desire to shield his family from public life. Dylan’s first well-known relationship was with artist Suze Rotolo, who was pictured with Dylan on the cover of his second album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

Speaking in his memoir, Chronicles Volume 1, Dylan said of her: “She was the most erotic thing I’d ever seen… The air was suddenly filled with banana leaves. We started talking and my head started to spin“. After Rotolo, Dylan had a highly publicized relationship with her collaborator, Joan Baez. The former couple first met in 1961 and collaborated for years before their relationship blossomed into romance.

As said earlier, Dylan has been married two times. The singer’s first marriage was in 1965 to Sarah Lownds. The couple’s marriage came to an end in 1977. In 1986, he married his backup singer Carolyn Dennis, and divorced in October 1992.

Bob Dylan’s first wife Sara Dylan

Sara Dylan also known as Sarah Lownds is the first wife of the music icon. Sara who has worked as a model and a secretary at Drew Associates was born Shirley Marlin Noznisky. She was persuaded by her first husband, magazine photographer Hans Lownds to change her name to Sara because his first wife, also named Shirley, had left him and he did not want to be reminded of his previous marriage.

Sara Dylan and Hans Lownds had a daughter Maria Dylan before their marriage collapsed. Sara was still married to Hans when they met. On why she left her husband, Hans’ son from a previous marriage, Peter Lownds, revealed: “Bob was the reason.” 

Bob Dylan and his first wife Sara Lownds tied the knot on November 22, 1965. A year later the couple had their first child- a son whom they named  Jesse Byron Dylan. They went on to have three more children: Anna Lea Dylan (born July 11, 1967), Samuel Isaac Abram (born July 30, 1968), and Jakob Luke (born December 9, 1969). Dylan also adopted Sara’s daughter from a prior marriage, Maria Lownds (Maria Dylan).

Dylan and Sara’s marriage has been cited by music writers and biographers as the inspiration for many songs Dylan created during the 1960s and ’70s, and the 1975 album Blood on the Tracks has been cited by many as Dylan’s account of their disintegrating marriage. The couple called their marriage a quit on June 29, 1977.

Carolyn Dennis is his second wife

Dylan married his backup singer Carolyn Dennis on June 4, 1986, and had a daughter, Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan, born on January 31, 1986. The couple’s marriage and child remained a closely guarded secret from the public until the publication of Howard Sounes’s biography Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan, in 2001.
